What's the purpose of biological viruses and their carriers?

We know that plants and trees produce seeds which plant new plants and trees; there is a purpose for this. However a virus apparently simply creates a virion which transports the DNA material to another host where the virus once again creates another virion ready for dispatch. But all this seems a bit pointless doesn't it!!?
